Guardian Unlimited Music

Obituaries: Paul Raven
Ian Abrahams
Tuesday November 20, 2007

The bass player Paul Raven, who has succumbed, aged 46, to an apparent heart attack following recording sessions in Switzerland, might have presented himself on stage as a commando-clad nightmare vision, but it did not prevent him becoming a much-loved figure on the industrial rock scene. When playing in Japan in the band Zilch, he was affectionately dubbed "Polar Bear" and "Silverback" because of his size in comparison to his Japanese fans. His contributions to a website run by his principal band, Killing Joke, revealed a well-travelled man with many friends and a keen interest in breeding pit bulls. [read more]

well it's bad news to start with... since the last update we've lost a really good friend and the world's lost a great bass player... paul raven died in his sleep at the tragically early age of 46... paul had been in geneva recording with ted parsons and treponem pal and after a night celebrating and reminiscing with old friends he didn't wake up... there was a very emotional service in france on halloween followed by a suitably raucous celebration
at the bar in geneva where paul spent
his last night - i know he'd have definitely
enjoyed the second part...

Al Jourgensen Comments (Update)

from Headbanger's Blog:
“Tony’s replacing Raven because we’ve gone through hell over the last weeks and I know Tony and Raven got along great and Raven would have loved it,” Jourgensen told Headbangersblog.com.

For the C U LaTouR, Jourgensen will be joined by singer Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory, Ascension of the Watchers), guitarists Tommy Victor (Prong) and Sin Quirin (Revolting Cocks), keyboardist John Bechdel (Prong, Ascension of the Watchers, False Icons) and bassist Tony Campos (Static-X). Campos will be taking the place of recently departed Ministry and Killing Joke Paul Raven, who died of a heart attack on October 20 in Geneva, Switzerland.

MINISTRY mainman Al Jourgensen and members of KILLING JOKE have commented on the passing of bassist Paul Raven, who was found dead yesterday (Saturday, October 20) in a private home in a small French village on the Swiss border.

Stated Jourgensen: "I am in total shock. The world of music is a sadder, emptier place. Not only was Raven an extraordinary talent, but one of my closest dearest friends. Our condolences and prayers go to his immediate family. He will be truly missed by artists, musicians and his fans the world over.

"The one consolation is knowing Raven's already hooked up with the right people and started a new project in the After Life.

"God's speed, Raven. Rest in peace, you fucking pirate."

Ministry Bassist Paul Raven Dies of Heart Attack in Geneva

October 20, 2007 FRANCE - Ministry's bassist Paul Raven was found dead today in a private home in a small French village on the Swiss border. Initial reports indicate Raven's passing was due to a heart attack. Raven (known also for his work with Killing Joke, Prong) was in Geneva working with French recording artists Treponem Pal on their new release, along side drummer Ted Parsons (ex-Prong, ex-Killing Joke) and members of The Young Gods.

Born in Wolverhampton UK on January 16, 1961, Paul Vincent Raven established himself with his work in the seminal post-punk/industrial group Killing Joke when, in 1982 he replaced the original bassist for the band, recording and touring with the group throughout its most commercially successful period, performing on Fire Dances , Night Time and Brighter than a Thousand Suns . Throughout his extensive career, Raven participated in other collaborations including Prong, Murder, Inc., Pigface, Godflesh.

Most recently, Raven was nominated for a 2006 Grammy for Best Metal Performance for his work with Ministry's Al Jourgensen and Prong's Tommy Victor, with whom he had begun working with in late 2005 on the 13 th Planet release Rio Grande Blood. After a 2006 World Tour with Ministry, Raven helped Jourgensen and Prong's Tommy Victor pen the September 18, 2006 Ministry release The Last Sucker , Ministry's final studio release.

Raven's newest project, Mob Research, featuring members of Warrior Soul and The Mission UK, and scheduled for release on 13 th Planet Records in 2008, was in the final mixing and mastering phases at the time of Raven's sudden and unexpected passing.

Tommy Victor has released the following statement:

"Paul Raven was a grand-master of our cult, high up in the inner sanctum sanctorum. His status can never be forgotten, nor his presence replaced. One of our heroes. An unbelievable loss, but we are always going to laugh and smile in remembrance…. exactly how he wanted it."

13th Planet Records and the MINISTRY camp pays homage to the late Raven: visit the memorial.

10.31 Raven's Funeral

from The Gathering mailing list, Posted by Rob Moss:
Dear All

Just got back from the funeral.

I wanted to let you all know that it was a beautiful day in a delightful setting, so fitting.

The first person we saw at the airport was Big Paul.
We immediately accosted him, held him hostage and took him to Annecy where he was subjected to a day of Headcount/Mike Coles stupidity which he loved!

The funeral service included, at the request of Paul's Mum, a couple of prayers and a short sermon.
Jaz and Geordie were there and Jaz said a few words.

All of Raven's (known!!!) children were there. It was lovely to see his little boys again - they are lovely little fellas. And everyone was positive and shared fond memories. So many attractive women there - well done my son ! ;-)

In the evening we met at L'Usine in Geneva where Paul spent his last evening and we celebrated his life. So many glasses raised, so many great stories told and so many happy faces. The XXV Gathering DVD was played and we remembered the great man.

He had one hell of a send off Gatherers.

Just a shame the old buzzard wasn't there, he'd have loved it!

* five children
